Vioxx

Vioxx also known as Rofecoxib was a drug widely used for arthritis. Merck, the pharmaceutical company responsible for making, marketing and distributing the drug to treat osteoarthritis, acute pain conditions, and dysmenorrhoea voluntarily pulled their drug off the market due to previously known scientific studies revealing the drug doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke with a wide range of injuries including death.

Merck launched Vioxx in 1999 and brought in revenues in excess of 10 billion dollars.
