Topamax, also known as topiramate, is a drug used to treat epilepsy and seizures.  Topamax, is manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals and has been prescribed to over 800,000 people since its introduction in the late 1990s. 

It has been widely used by women.  New data suggest that the drug Topamax and its generic brands increase the risk for birth defects in babies born to women who use the medication during pregnancy, according to the FDA.  Birth defects include cleft lip and cleft palate.  Recently, Ortho-McNeil issued a warning regarding Topamax's tendency to cause eye disorders such as secondary angle closure glaucoma and acute myopia, conditions characterized by blurred vision and eye pain.

According to a September 26, 2001 press release, at least 23 Topamax patients have developed glaucoma. While Ortho-McNeil reports that the condition is reversible and dissipates upon discontinuation of Topamax, failure to act at the first sign of these side effects can lead to permanent and serious vision problems.
