The FDA safety communication issued a warning to the general public and the medical community that the agency is monitoring the side effects of SGLT2 inhibitors to determine whether changes need to be made in the prescribing protocol of the drug.

FDA Warns That SGLT2 Inhibitors for Diabetes May Result in a Serious Condition of Too Much Acid in the Blood.

The FDA wants patients to report any unusual side effects after starting the drug therapy to their doctors. Also, it urges medical providers and patients to report those side effects to the agency’s MedWatch program so the FDA can continue to monitor the possible dangers associated with the drug.

Invokana (canagliflozin)

Introduced March 2013 Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson)

Invokana is Used to Treat Type 2 Diabetes

Supports the kidney’s elimination of sugar through urine, effectively lowering blood sugar levels. However, these drugs (SGLT2 inhibitors) seem to lead to a serious condition known as ketoacidosis – a serious condition where the body fails to regulate ketone (toxic acids) production causing accumulation of blood acids in the body. Increased levels of ketones in the body can cause a number of severe and even life-threatening problems, which can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, mental confusion, unusual, intense fatigue. If ketoacidosis is left unchecked, it can lead to diabetic coma and even death.

It can take up to two weeks from the start of taking the medication for any symptoms to start.

Ketoacidosis is more common in Type 1 Diabetes. Because it is unexpected in Type 2 Diabetes patients and can appear with only slightly increased blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 Diabetes, it is possible it may not be quickly identified or treated.
